Car falls into sinkhole in Redruth car park

An empty parked car has fallen into a sinkhole.

The Mini car fell into a hole about 2m (6.6ft) deep on Sunday in a car park behind Berrymans Bakery on Trew Parc, in Redruth, Cornwall.

Cornwall Council said its contractor Cormac secured the site and believed it to have been caused by a mining feature.

Dan Berriman, from Cornwall Mining Consultants, said engineers “need to understand what is going on” before any action to remove the car is taken.

Mr Berriman said there were hazards all over the town as a result of historic mining going back hundreds of years in the Pednandrea Mine.

He said there were more than 20,000 mine shafts across the south-west of England and probably “less than 10% have been properly fixed”.

He added the big issue engineers faced was that, to get the car out, they would need to bring in heavier equipment, such as a crane or a lifter, but it “may not be standing on stable ground”.

Resident Chris Bassett, who lives next to the car park, said she left her home about 14:30 GMT and came back about 15:00 to the “Mini down the hole”.

Ms Bassett said she contacted the emergency services and could hear rubble falling into the hole.

Cornwall Council said the collapse was on private land and it was working to establish the identity of the landowner to resolve the matter.
