Over the past five years (2020-24), 13 people have been killed and a further 176 were seriously injured in collisions where alcohol impairment was a contributory factor, said Vision Zero

Designated drivers across Devon and Cornwall are being offered free soft drinks at more than 260 pubs, clubs and restaurants throughout December.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is one of the ‘Fatal Five’ causes of serious injuries and deaths on roads.

A scheme organised by the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership named the ‘Lift Legend’ aims to minimise incidents of drink-driving during the festive period.

Adrian Leisk, Devon & Cornwall Police’s head of road safety, said: “The only way you can be absolutely sure that you are safe to drive is by not drinking at all beforehand.”

‘None for the road’

The prescribed alcohol limit for driving in England is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood or 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

Last year, more than 2,000 arrests were made for drink-driving in the region, the road safety partnership said.

Mr Leisk said: “You can also be arrested even if you are under the prescribed limit if you are deemed not to be in proper control of your vehicle.

“Have none for the road and make the most of the free drinks being offered by our fantastic Lift Legend venues.”

‘Get home safely’

St Austell Brewery is taking part in the scheme this year across its 40 pubs, and Andrew Turner, chief operating officer, said: “Christmas is a time for celebrating with friends, family and work colleagues.

“We want to see everyone get home safely which is why we are delighted to be supporting the Lift Legend scheme with Vision Zero South West”.

Designated drivers must let the bartender know they are a Lift Legend for the night and, when purchasing their first soft drink, they will receive a voucher for a free one, the campaign said.
