Cornish Pirates: Forwards coach Joe Walsh “delighted” with Caldy win

Cornish Pirates forwards coach Joe Walsh said he was “absolutely delighted” with his side’s showing during the 41-21 victory at Caldy in the Champ.

Walsh labelled it “the most complete performance of the season” after Pirates ran in six tries to claim a bonus-point victory which lifts them up to eighth in the table, leapfrogging their opponents from The Wirral in the process.

“We’re absolutely delighted. We’ve had a couple of tough days as a group and our selection has been really dictated by bodies available,” Walsh told BBC Radio Cornwall.

“To put on a performance like that, after a difficult week with injuries and a cumulative load is probably what we’re most pleased with.”

The Cornish club edged into a seven-point lead at the interval on Saturday, thanks to tries by Arthur Relton and Luke Ratcliff.

But they took full control of the contest after the break and tries from James French and Harry Yates within the space of five minutes meant Pirates had a three-score lead with half-an-hour still remaining.

Tomiwa Agbongbon’s try eight minutes from time took the game away from Caldy once and for all before Matty Ward rounded off the scoring as Pirates claimed all five points in the north west.

“For us, we’re delighted with being able to deny them the four-try bonus at the end just to keep in the race for the top-six,” Walsh added.

“The guys have really come together this week and that’s probably our most complete performance of the season – we’re absolutely delighted.”

Pirates continue their campaign with a home clash next up against Nottingham, who currently sit three points above them in the table, on Saturday.
