Basingstoke FC staff member targeted by ‘obscene’ comment

An investigation has been started after a female member of staff at a football match was targeted by “serious, obscene” language by an opposition fan.

The incident happened last Saturday during Weymouth FC’s home match against Basingstoke Town.

An “obscene” comment of a sexual nature was directed towards one of Basingstoke’s female members of staff and was picked up in the audio match coverage, Weymouth FC said.

The club said it has been contacted by the FA, with The Terras warning of “damaging” consequences.

A spokesperson for Weymouth FC said: “We are currently collaborating with all agencies to identify the person responsible, as this is a very serious situation the individual has put the club in.

“We remind supporters that racist, sexist, homophobic, and all abusive language and threatening behaviour will not be tolerated in any form.”

It added: “Our security team are always on hand to ensure your safety, and you should always report to them any incident you see or hear that is of an offensive nature.”
