Thousands of people descended on Bridgwater for the annual carnival

The spooky season has come to a head this week, with Halloween celebrations across the county.

Somerset saw care homes give away pumpkins and villages celebrate unique traditions.

And thousands descended on Bridgwater for the annual Guy Fawkes Carnival, which featured colourful displays and carnival dancers.

Shine bright: Around 150,000 people descended on Bridgwater on Saturday night to watch the dazzling lights of the Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival.

Spooky Season: The Catherine House Care Home in Frome held a pumpkin giveaway to raise donations. Ruby, one of the residents, joined in dressed as the “Wicked Witch of Wookey Hole”.

Punkie night: On Thursday, a festival in Hinton St George saw children carry “punkies” – lanterns traditionally made from a large turnip known as a mangelwurzel – and parade through the village singing punkie songs.

Nudes: The images for the Weston-super-Mare Blind Naked Calendar 2026 feature nude models’ portraits with a filter, to help depict their own vision loss conditions, and will raise money for the charity Deafblind UK.

Josephine Boulter, who is Miss August and November in the calendar, said she came up with the idea after someone made a “patronising” comment while she was on holiday in Butlins.
