Police want to speak to the man dressed in black after the assault, as well as the driver of the car which passed him in Kenn Close, Weston-super-Mare

A 12-year-old girl has been sexually assaulted in a park, sparking a police CCTV appeal.

The girl was in Byron Recreation Park in Weston-super-Mare when a man approached her, touched her waist and kissed her at about 21:20 GMT on Saturday, Avon and Somerset Police said. She ran away and told a group of women close by what had happened.

Police have released CCTV of a man they want to speak to and a car whose driver they want to identify in case they have dashcam footage which could help the investigation.

The alleged attacker is described as being in his early-20s, black, tall and of slim build, and as having facial stubble.

Neighbourhood Ch Insp Andy Barry said the girl showed “enormous courage in the face of a truly horrendous sexual assault”.

“She did absolutely the right thing in running, telling responsible adults about what happened and ensuring this was reported to police,” he added.

“We’re also grateful to those women who kept her safe in the immediate aftermath of this frightening experience.”

Police want to speak to this man captured on CCTV near the scene

“Even at this time of the year we expect there were multiple people out in the area on a Saturday night and would be keen to hear from anyone with information that could benefit our investigation,” Ch Insp Barry added.

He said police particularly want to speak to the driver who passed the man in Kenn Close to establish whether they have any dashcam footage.

“We have not had any other similar reports of this happening in the area, but recognise this news will cause concern locally and so officers and PCSOs will be conducting extra patrols in the area,” he added.
