Matt Taylor will not change Exeter City style of play while in charge

Matt Taylor says he will not try and change Exeter City’s style of play while he is in interim charge of the side.

The former Grecians boss has returned to the club for the rest of the season after Gary Caldwell left to become Wigan boss last month.

Taylor was previously in charge of Exeter for more than four years and led the club to promotion from League Two in 2022 before leaving in October of that year and being succeeded by Caldwell.

His first game at the helm was a 1-1 draw with Burton Albion on Tuesday night.

“I’ve got to be careful because a Matt Taylor team probably looks a little bit different, I think the Exeter City fans know that,” Taylor told BBC Radio Devon.

“There’s been a fantastic style introduced to this group of players, but in terms of where maybe the teams evolved from my time, I think there was a different profile, a different dynamic, a different understanding of what a route to goal was and what a game of football looked like.

“So I’m really embracing what we are right now and trying to enhance and grow that as best I possibly can because I think that suits this group of players.”
