Plymouth triple-amputee wins armed forces inspiration award

A former Royal Marine commando has won an award as part of a national platform which celebrates the achievements of the armed forces community.

Plymouth-based triple amputee Mark Ormrod MBE won the ‘Inspiration Award’ at the Soldiering On Awards in London on Wednesday.

Mr Ormrod, 42, lost both legs and his right arm when he stood on an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Afghanistan on Christmas Eve in 2007.

When accepting the award, Mr Omrod said it was an “incredible” experience.

“To win the award in front of my peers and the people I love being around was awesome,” he said.

“It is great to be fortunate enough to have these platforms like last night to showcase what we’ve managed to rebuild in our lives.”

Mr Omrod has set records through challenges including achieving the world record for the fastest triple amputee 1km swim and raised more than £150,000 when running a 5km (3.2 mile) run in prosthetics.

He said he hoped the award would “send a message of hope” to anyone struggling or going through difficulties.

“You don’t have to have had three limbs torn off to overcome adversity in your life, it comes in many different forms,” he said.

“The more we can spread that message, the louder we can shout it, hopefully the more people we can reach.”

He said he celebrated with two “fancy” desserts at the event which was supported by former Bros singer Matt Goss and broadcaster Jeremy Vine.
