Planning permission to demolish a hotel in Dorset has been revoked by councillors after a developer failed to fulfil its planning obligations.
In 2023, MHA Burleigh Poole was granted permission to demolish Poole Quay Hotel and replace it with commercial units, flats and a new hotel, subject to a Section 106 agreement requiring it to contribute to local services.
But in March 2024, the hotel closed suddenly and the company went into liquidation.
Councillors at Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole BCP Council’s planning committee overturned permission for the scheme after the company missed a deadline to sign the Section 106 papers.
The plans were originally approved on condition of a £655,948 contribution from the developers towards local education, public transport and open space improvements.
The committee heard that, as a result of the liquidation, control of MHA Burleigh Poole had been in new hands since January.
An agreed Section 106 agreement was sent in April and the company was given 14 days to sign.
A further deadline of 31 October was extended to 20 November at the request of the company, the meeting was told.
Councillors at Thursday’s meeting heard the agreement remained unsigned and the application had been brought back to committee for the decision to be overturned.
