Truro City boss John Askey left ‘bitterly disappointed’ after cup exit

Truro City boss John Askey was left “bitterly disappointed” following his side’s National League Cup semi-final exit against Boreham Wood.

City forward Rekeil Pyke was shown a straight red card on the hour mark for a late challenge on defender Joe Newton with the game goalless as the Tinners bowed out of the competition, eventually losing 2-0.

When asked whether he thought the red card was the correct decision, Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall: “At the time, no. So we’ll just have to have a look at it, whether it was or not.

“Obviously, that had a big influence on how the game panned out. But, having said that, even after the red card, we’ve probably had the better chances, and to concede the first goal was really unlucky – [I’m] bitterly disappointed.”

Askey was later shown a red card for his protestations from the touchline about the decision.

“Officiating and what gets you sent off, I don’t know anymore,” he said.

“You cannot show any emotion. If you get sent off for throwing your gloves on the floor, then what do you say about it?

“Obviously, I was frustrated, angry, and that was the way I showed it and that warrants a sending off nowadays.”
