Truro City’s latest late loss to Braintree ‘beggars belief’ – John Askey

Truro City boss John Askey said his side’s latest late loss “beggars belief” as the Tinners conceded twice after the 80th minute to lose 3-2 to fellow National League strugglers Braintree Town.

It was the fourth time in their past five league matches that Askey’s side have conceded result-defining goals in the final 10 minutes.

Saturday’s loss at the Truro Community Stadium left Truro bottom of the table, 12 points from safety with 12 games to play, as Braintree cut their gap to the survival places to three points.

“It’s just the manner in which we’re losing, it doesn’t matter who we’re playing,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall.

“We’ve played teams in and around us over the last few weeks and we should be winning at least one or two games that we’ve played recently.

“To concede the goals right at the end just beggars belief.”

The loss makes it even more difficult to see how the Tinners will extend their first-ever season in the fifth tier to a second campaign.

It left Askey frustrated as they dropped points to another relegation rival – having lost at home to Gateshead last week.

“If we could do something, we’d have done it by now,” he added.

“But obviously we work hard in talking about things that have happened and go through things in training, try to replicate things, but at the end of the day it comes down to players on the pitch and the decision-making.

“For the majority of the game a lot of players have done well, but I thought defensively today, especially in the first half, we were poor.”
